U.S. History to 1877

Age of Jackson

Expanded Suffrage = increase/expansion of voting (suffrage) for more people

"Spoils System" = Jackson chose supporters (friends) of his to work in the government as opposed to qualified people....led to corruption in some cases.

The Nullification Crisis = South Carolina believed that they had the right to nullify (cancel / ignore) a tariff tax the government created. South Carolina threatened to secede (leave) the U.S. if the tariff would be enforced.

War on the Bank = Jackson did not like the national bank (Hamilton's old idea), because he felt it benefitted the wealthy and was unconstitutional. He dissolved the bank by removing it's funding.

Native American Removal = White settlers wanted fertile lands in Georgia to expand their plantations, but Natives already lived on the land and refused to move or relocate.

Indian Removal Act = Authorized President Jackson to negotiate with Natives to trade their Georgia lands for land west of the Mississippi River

Worcester V. Georgia = Ruled that Georgia's government had no authority over Native land (no sovereignty). Effect = Jackson ignored this ruling and removed the Natives anyways...led to the "Trail of Tears," Natives were forced to march 800 miles to their new land in Oklahoma
